Milestones

1930

Albert Steigenberger, a businessman from Lower Bavaria, buys the founding hotel in Baden-Baden, the Hotel Europäischer Hof.

1940

Albert Steigenberger acquires the Hotel Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt am Main. Only four years later, the hotel was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War. It re-opened with an initial contingent of 20 beds in 1948. Five years later, the fully rebuilt Frankfurter Hof reopened as the city's foremost hotel.

1949-1958

Steigenberger takes over the hotels Badischer Hof in Baden-Baden (1949) and Ritter's Parkhotel in Bad Homburg (1950). Albert Steigenberger is assisted and supported by his son Egon.

1958

Company founder Albert Steigenberger dies. His son Egon takes over the running of the company. He prepares the company for the challenges of the future, such as air traffic, internationalisation and holiday tourism.

1958-1970

The company expands: the Airport Restaurants in Frankfurt are opened in 1960.

1972

Egon Steigenberger purchases the Hotel Training School in Bad Reichenhall in order to offer the highest standards of training for the company's up- and coming generation of hotel staff. Subsidiary companies are founded: the Frankhof-Kellerei in Hochheim am Main, *H*E*A*D GmbH, a company for furnishing and equipping hotels and Steigenberger Consulting GmbH, a consulting firm for the hotel and tourism sectors.

1970s

Steigenberger develops new holiday hotels and holiday concepts with animation, sport, culture and health programmes. The prototypes are developed in the Bavarian Forest: in Lam and Grafenau. By the end of the 1970's, they have been joined by a number of well-known hotels in renowned health resorts, such as Bad Kissingen and Bad Neuenahr, and at Europe's new air-transport hub, Frankfurt Rhine-Main Airport.

1980s

Steigenberger celebrates its 50th company anniversary.
Further hotels are incorporated into the corporation: for example, hotels in Berlin, Baden-Baden, Bonn as well as in Saanen-Gstaad and Davos in Switzerland.

1985

Egon Steigenberger dies. The company is converted into a public limited company, in which the Steigenberger family holds 99.6% of the shares.

1990

Steigenberger takes over the management of the Guest House of the Federal Government of Germany on the Petersberg, near Bonn.

1991

The company initiates its multi-brand strategy with the InterCityHotel in Frankfurt. For the first time, guests can stay with Steigenberger in 3-star category hotels.

1992

In 1992, the company opens its first 2-star hotel in Speyer. With the Steigenberger Esprix Hotels brand, the company developed a hotel concept offering as much comfort as necessary with no superfluous extras.

1993

Steigenberger opens the first Steigenberger Maxx Hotel in Jena. These hotels stand for casual, nostalgic comfort with an 'American touch'.

1990s

The period of greatest expansion for the company: more than 40 new hotels are opened or taken over. Steigenberger enters the Austrian market with five hotels. The number of InterCityHotels grows to 16, in North Germany, the company's first 3-star holiday hotels open their doors for holidaymakers on the Baltic Sea. A second hotel, the Steigenberger Esprix Hotel Frankfurt Airport, opens at Frankfurt Airport.

2003

5,446 employees generate annual revenues of € 441.3 million.

2004

All hotels of the Steigenberger Esprix and Steigenberger Maxx brands are – depending on their location and category –integrated into the key Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts or InterCityHotel brands.

2005

Steigenberger celebrates its 75th company anniversary.
No other hotel company in Germany can look back over such a long history as a family-owned enterprise.

2006

Steigenberger opens its first hotel in Italy, the Steigenberger Hotel Therme Meran. Also in the company's portfolio since April 2006: the Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe at Dresden's 'Neumarkt',  opposite the 'Frauenkirche' church. The Steigenberger Strandhotel Zingst opens on the Baltic Sea Coast on 1 June.
